About

1. About the Department: The Department of Mathematics is one of the oldest departments of Bijoy Krishna Girls’ College Howrah aka Howrah Girls’ College. The department was established way back in 1948 as an I.Sc. subject. Later in 1965 it was introduced as a Pass (General) subject and in 1980 it started functioning as an Honours department.

The Department has been served by many eminent Mathematicians of their time, Prof. Kshama Mukherjee, Prof. Tapan Kumar De, Prof. Nirmal Kumar Bose, Prof. Bibhas Chandra Samanta, Dr. Subha Chandra, Prof.  Swapna Dasgupta, Prof. Nabin Kumar Jana, to name a few.

At present, four faculty members Prof. Ranen Bhattacharyya, Dr. Rupak Bhattacharyya, Prof. Pratap Mondal and Dr. Samiran Banerjee are serving the department in substantive posts.

Right now, Dr. Samiran banerjee is acting as the Head of the Department.

Since its inception, the department is known for discipline and punctuality. Micro-teaching, Online and Offline examinations, participation in seminars and workshops, Class-room management and beautification, publication of Wall Magazine cum E-magazine MATHEMATICA, computer laboratory activity are amongst regular activities of the Honours students.

As per direction of University of Calcutta,  CBCS system has been introduced in 2018. Students get lots of choices in selection of subjects.  In addition to regular curriculum activities,  assignments,  class notes,  e-notes are provided to the students for their better understanding. To increase Students’ interest in research arena they are assigned with projects on different topics and they deliver their respective topics with a smart presentation using power point.

Students of Mathematics also participate in multidisciplinary activities, annual Cultural Programme and Competitions, Quiz Competitions, and Annual Sports organized by the College with flying colours. They also participate in social activities organized by NSS, BKGC.

The department is equipped with two airconditioned Class rooms/lab and a big non-AC room  with dedicated Wi-Fi connections.  The academic activities are fully ICT dependent with Smart Class Room. It has a rich collection of text and reference books in its departmental library.

Communication with students and teachers are not bounded within the regular college hours. Students can discuss on any academic topic with themselves through dedicated WhatsApp groups. Teachers keep an eye on the discussion and give their timely input whenever needed.

Connection with present students and Alumni are made through the departmental Facebook page and WhatsApp group.

 In 2018 the department has successfully organized an International Conference, Facets of Basic Science & Applications jointly with other science disciplines.

The result of B.Sc. (Honours) in Mathematics by the students is more than satisfactory.

 

2. Vision:

To develop student’s abilities for mathematization is the main goal of mathematics education. Besides this there are so many goals of mathematics, like, to ensure a good start to the students in learning mathematics. To give clarity on fundamental concepts and processes of the subject. To create love, faith and interest for learning mathematics. To develop in them a taste and confidence in mathematics. To develop appreciation for accuracy. To acquaint them with the relation of mathematics with their present as well as future life. To see aesthetics in mathematics. To develop in them the habits like regularity, practice, patience, self reliance and hard work. To apply mathematics in other subjects. To acquaint them with mathematical language and symbolism. To prepare them for the learning of mathematics of higher classes. To prepare them for mathematical exhibitions.
